This weekend at the Santa Clara University Dempsey Cronin Invitational, Los Altos's Alex Wong & William Zeng defeated Campolindo’s David Gomez-Siu & Sophie Stankus in the final round. Negating the topic “The USFG should pass the Stop Arctic Ocean Drilling Act of 2017 (H.R. 1784),” Wong & Zeng won on a 2-1 decision.
The tournament was greeted by 104 open teams and 89 novice teams. Rounds were double flighted; varsity debated during flight one of each round while novice debated in flight two. In addition to parliamentary debate, competitors also had the option to double-enter in other speech and debate events.
Like last year, the open division allowed 32 teams to break to double-octofinals — an improvement from previous tournaments. The top open speaker was Campolindo’s Krish Visht, who dropped in semifinals to Zeng & Wong. Second and third place speakers were awarded to Bentley’s Jeremy Hubinger and partner Irene Partsuf respectively.
In the novice division, 16 teams broke to an even octofinals elimination round. In the final novice round, Bishop O’Dowd’s Paulna Harding & Gratia O’Rafferty defeated Menlo-Atherton's Elley Goldberg & Misha Kulshresta on a 3-0 decision.
In novice speaker awards, first place was awarded to Wilcox's Bilal Malikand. In addition to claiming the novice championship, Paulna Harding won second speaker. Third speaker was awarded to Wilcox's Nabeel Sbzwari.
