NorCal Season Begins at Northgate

Saturday saw 67 NorCal teams from 9 schools in competition at Northgate High School in Walnut Creek for the Straight From the Horse’s Mouth Invitational, a season opener. Out of 27 teams in open, 6 teams ended up with 4-1 records, and none with 5-0 records:

Bentley Gabriela Burshteyn & Katie Stamm-Kirk

Bentley Paul Furer & Lucy Holt

Campolindo Conor Hanvey & Peter Moore

Irvington Michelle Huang & Aditya Kaushik

Irvington Vasuman Moza & Rachit Pareek

San Marin Erik Cervantes & Manny LaCarrubba

These teams each earn 8 points for a start in the 2015-2016 POI rankings, which puts Bentley and Irvington at an early lead, though with two tournaments happening nationally in the upcoming week, we can only see if that lead will hold.

In the junior varsity division, with only 15 teams in competition, three teams earned 4-1 records. And in the novice division, open only to first-time debaters, five teams earned 4-1 records, while two teams from Irvington and San Marin High School earned the only undefeated records in the tournament.

Teams with 4-1 and 5-0 records earned trophies in the theme of the tournament, more accurately described as stuffed animals-- which, while not as official as normal trophies, will certainly make prospective debaters curious.

The tournament top speaker was Anna Skarr of Windsor High School, closely followed by her partner Claire Ernst, also of Windsor. Notably, all speakers ranked ninth or higher were from either Windsor or Irvington High School.

For sweepstakes calculations, Irvington took 1st place in the large entry category, based on their percentage of wins, with the largest number of teams in the tournament-- 15. San Marin High School earned second place with 11 teams competing. . In the small entry category, Berkeley High School took 1st with one team competing, beating Campolindo (in second place) with seven teams.

Resolutions included two normal policy, one fact, one value, and a metaphor round, and may be found on the resources page.
