Club Parli-coached debaters turned in a terrific overall performance at the February 9-11 Stanford Debate Invitational hosted by Stanford University which saw 5 teams reach elimination rounds in open parliamentary debate and 2 teams reach elimination rounds in JV parliamentary debate.
In Varsity Parli, Alden O’Rafferty & Connor Whitehill, debating for Bishop O’Dowd, compiled a 5-1 prelim record and reached the tournament’s semifinal round. Gunn’s Grant Cheng & Thomas Li battled to a 4-2 prelim record and advanced to octafinals. Albert Has & Jessica Zhu, debating under the Aragon flag, finished prelims at 5-1 and made double-octafinals, a result matched by O’Dowd’s Meade Jacobsen & Milo Kuiper Rauch after racking up a 4-2 prelim record. Debating for Hillview, Sheryl Chen dropped in triples after compiling a 4-2 prelim record.
In JV parli Bishop O’Dowd’s Kayly Kassab & Max Wilcoxson went 4-1 and advanced to octas while schoolmates Cordelia Kuiper Rauch & Will Lecoq’s 3-2 prelim performance saw them drop on a 2-1 split in doubles. O’Dowd debaters Sylvie Richards & Vashe Sundar achieved a 3-2 winning record but did not advance to slims.
Alden O’Rafferty was the tournament’s 8th speaker while Albert Hao was ranked 19th.
