Citrus Valley takes first at the Claremont Bargain Belt Invitational
October 23rd marked the end of the 4th annual Bargain Belt Invitational, hosted by Claremont High School. Bargain Belt is a low-cost tournament run by Claremont with the goal of making the debate experience available to all teams.
This year, 46 schools competed in the tournament and 28 parliamentary teams competed to be the Bargain Belt parliamentary debate champions. Citrus Valley’s Silviu Andronescu & Lena Nguyen debated their way to the top, and secured themselves the first place position in parliamentary debate.
In finals, Andronescu & Nguyen defeated Bonita Vista’s Gilbert Neuner & Mary Talamantez in a 3-0 decision on the topic, “The United States Federal Government would support all colonization efforts to Mars."
On their way to the final round, Andronescu & Nguyen defeated La Canada’s Ravi Dashputre & Coleman Cornell in quarterfinals on a 2-1 decision and the previous year’s Bargain Belt champions, Claremont’s Georges Achy & Kavan Nakai, in semifinals on a 2-1 decision. Semifinals was a repeat of a previous matchup in the third preliminary round, in which Achy & Nakai won.
Bonita Vista debaters ended the tournament with the top three speaker awards: Gilbert Neuner ended ranked first, followed by Danielle Bloom and Mary Talamantez.
