McMinnville & Lake Oswego share Clackamas title
BY KARL MOEGLEIN
As Oregon's fall season ended at Clackamas High School, seven teams emerged from prelims with 3-0 records. Only four made it into semifinals. South Eugene’s Henry Fisher & Carson Schmittle and Lauren Anderson & Rebecca Namyet, as well as Lake Oswego’s Sarah Jane Griffiths & Sarah Kwartler, each were 3-0, but fell short of the 165 speaker points acquired by McMinnville’s Joe Gullo & Benjamin Pollak, the fourth seed. With a whopping 178 speaker points, Ashland’s Noah Falkner & John Ropp were the top seed and the 1st and 2nd speaker, after both dropping only one speaker point each during prelims.
In the semifinal round between Ashland and McMinnville, Falkner & Ropp unsuccessfully ran a capitalism kritik, with Pollak & Gullo picking up the round. In the other semifinal, Lake Oswego’s Jackson Dyal & Kyle Padgett faced off against Lincoln’s Maia Abbruzzese and Zachary Nash. Lake Oswego prevailed. Since Clackamas only has one day for the entire tournament, Lake Oswego and McMinnville shared first place honors.
Following Ropp and Falkner as top speakers were Lincoln’s Jack Sanders and Shelia Panyam, who had 87 and 88 speaker points respectively.
