On Sunday, December 6, 51 open and 36 novice teams converged at Analy High school for the 2015 Frozen Banana Classic, a one-day, three-round tournament. Since its conception, the Banana Classic has gained repute for its whimsical trophies and banana-themed metaphor rounds. This year the tournament diverged from tradition in that rather than occurring in September as a season opener, it took place in early December - hence “frozen”.
This year’s Banana Classic was also distinguishable in that it served as a fundraiser for Analy’s debate coach, Lynette Williamson, who was recently diagnosed with ALS. Over the course of the thirty years she has been coaching Analy, Ms. Williamson has received many distinguishments: in 2000, she was named the Golden Gate Speech Association's Coach of the Year, and in 2005, she was inducted into the California High School Speech Coaches' Hall of Fame.
With many strong teams in contention for the coveted banana trophies, only nine open teams emerged with undefeated records:
Bentley’s Gabriela Burshteyn & Katie Stamm-Kirk
Lowell’s Thomas White & Emily Hall
Lowell’s Matthew Chin & Raul Rosenfeld
Miramonte’s Hannah Fishlow & Olivia Fishlow
Miramonte’s Rusheel Kapoor & Graham Berger
Miramonte’s Alexander Casendino & Shawn Honaryar
Sonoma Academy’s Caleb Kornfein & Audrey von Raesfeld
Windsor’s Will Hatcher & Cyrus Butler
Windsor’s Autumn Inman & Aly Young
In the novice division, three teams from Dougherty Valley, two teams from Sonoma Academy, and one Windsor team finished with 3-0 records. And in addition to 3-0s with solid trophies, all teams with winning records received plush bananas as awards.
