An unprecedented 136 teams competed in this year’s iteration of the Martin Luther King Invitational at James Logan High School, making it the largest high school parliamentary debate tournament in U.S. history (besting the previous record of 131 entries set by the 2013 Stanford Invitational). Out of this massive field, a mere 32 teams (23.5%) advanced to the elimination rounds.

Lowell High School’s Jeffrey Chen & Marc Cunningham (the 2013 MLK runner-ups) and Eli Pollock & Thomas White, both coached by Terry Abad, concluded tremendous undefeated runs by closing out, a truly incredible feat at such a large tournament. In semis, debating the resolution “Iraq should be partitioned into two or more states,” Chen & Cunningham dropped Dougherty Valley’s Konath & Wang while Pollock & White bested Monta Vista’s Jain & Li to lay co-claims to the title.

Jessica Weiss, also from Lowell, was the tournament's top speaker.
